eXaminer 1.0

eXaminer Screen shot of eXaminer 1.0

BACKGROUND
X-Plane can provide many items of data by means of a simple network connection to another computer using the UDP data protocol. A look at the 'Settings | Data Outputs' screen will show you all the data items available. Note that there are (in version 6.25) some 93 data 'channels' available numbered 0 thru 92. Each of these channels has 8 data values, again these are numbered from zero. 0-7.

PURPOSE
The purpose of eXaminer is to easily allow you to monitor a particular X-Plane UDP data item so that you can see how it behaves, and see what format the data is in. It can be frustrating when an item of data seems to be misbehaving and you can't SEE it. eXaminer shows incoming data as integer, float and hexadecimal.

TERMINOLOGY
It is possible to select which data channels you wish sent across the Network using the 'Settings | Data Outputs' screen menu, it is also possible to request these by sending a DSEL (Data SELect) network packet containing the index number of the channel you require. Conversely, you may also send a USEL (data UnSELect) packet to turn a data channel off again. eXaminer will do this for you.

GETTING STARTED
To use eXaminer, follow these simple steps.

  1. Go to the 'Settings | Internet Connections' screen in X-Plane.
  2. Enable the 'Data Receiver' option
  3. Enter the IP address of the machine running eXamine.
  4. Enter the port number you wish to receive data on.
(eXaminer was tested on, and defaults to - port 49999)
  5. Run eXaminer.
  6. If no Configuration file has been loaded, load it now. (*)
  7. Ensure the IP address of the X-Plane machine is correct.
  8. Ensure the listening port number is correct.
  9. Press the SET button.
  10. Select whichever data item you wish to examine from the pull-down list. The 8 variables for each item will be shown.
CONFIGURATION FILE(*)
eXaminer uses a simple configuration file (625.cfg) which contains the names of all the X-Plane data channels and data values. This allows you to create new configuration files for other versions of X-Plane, should the list of UDP data items change.

The config file is plain text and uses the following format:-

Title or Description of data channel
description of data item 0
description of data item 1
description of data item 2
description of data item 3
description of data item 4
description of data item 5
description of data item 6
description of data item 7

this repeats for each data channel.

MISCELLANEOUS
eXaminer uses a simple Windows .ini file to remember which IP address, port number and configuration file you last used.
